Watch The New Trailer For ‘3 Generations’

A transgender coming-of-age drama

Accurately depicting the transgender experience on film remains a challenge, but Gaby Dellal's highly anticipated drama is a notable effort. 3 Generations tells the story of Ray, a transgender teen in transition who is searching for acceptance under the roof of his mother and lesbian grandmother. The progressive indie film stars Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon, and former NYLON cover girl Elle Fanning

3 Generations originally debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2015 but is scheduled to hit the silver screen next month. However, Weinstein Company is currently in the process of challenging the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for giving the movie an R rating. Given that the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community are threatened more every single day, a film on this subject needs to be viewed by all.

Weinstein has argued that the film's "message of acceptance and inclusion" is imperative in view of what is happening to transgender people in the U.S. and abroad. “The fact that an R rating would prevent high school students from seeing this film would truly be a travesty,” said Weinstein. “The MPAA and I were able to come to an agreement on ‘Bully,’ and I am confident that we will be able to do so again.”

Watts stated that the film tells a "beautiful and touching story about family and identity" and is an "expression of love, acceptance, strength, and honesty—values that could not be more necessary right now.” Sarandon argued that the R rating will cause more harm as it prevents isolated transgender youth from having the opportunity to see a film that was made with them in mind.

3 Generations officially premieres in theaters on May 5. Watch the new trailer for the feature film, below.
