Glossier, Urban Outfitters, & More Stores That Have Closed Because Of Coronavirus

Companies are shutting their doors due to public safety concerns

Retailers across the globe are announcing store closures, hoping to help curb the spread of coronavirus. Large companies like Apple and Nike will be shutting down their stores, as well as smaller brands like Glossier and Buck Mason, with all announcing that they will continue to pay employees during their time out of work.

Lululemon originally announced that it would be limiting its store hours in North America from 12 P.M. to 6 P.M. only to change those plans hours later, saying that it will be closing its stores in North America and Europe beginning March 16 until March 27.

Emily Weiss wrote about her decision to close all of Glossier's stores, citing an article from The Atlantic, which urged people to "cancel everything."

"As a first-time CEO running a 5-year-old startup through its first global crisis, I read that Atlantic piece from bed last night with a heavy heart ('social distancing' is basically the opposite of our mission), and reconsidered my original position of 'let's follow, not lead' on the retail front. If stores start closing, we'll quickly follow suit. If foot traffic drops, we'll close," she wrote. "Then I thought: Wait a minute, we are leaders in retail, in so many ways. Our permanent and temporary offline experiences are more of a daily community event than a traditional store. Why wouldn't we lead here? This quickly became an easy, albeit painful, decision. Together with our community, we will always strive to create less harm and more good in the world."
