Thomas Day Is Keeping It Fresh

The alt-pop rising star on writing his best music yet, going pink, and why standing still was never an option.

by Jackie Bernstein

Thomas Day didn’t get here by standing still. The dynamic singer-songwriter has speed-run the Gen Z artist journey of posting pop covers on social media, gaining national recognition, and scoring a record contract — all in the public eye. At just 17, he appeared on a televised talent competition, where his persona (nationally ranked football player with a heart-on-his-sleeve vocal style) was presented as the archetypal high-school-movie dilemma. Which would he choose? Sports or music?

For Day, the choice was easy: “Music was my passion since I was a very young child, and I saw the opportunity to pursue it full time,” he shares. After he seized that opportunity, Day has shown a knack for shaking things up in the short amount of time that’s unfolded since. He moves between yearning love songs and pop-rock anthems with ease, and recently teased his next chapter with a fresh head of cotton-candy pink hair.

It’s an approach that feels right at home within Trident's "TriDifferent" campaign, a celebration of breaking free from sameness and bringing a fresh perspective to everyday life. To put that idea into practice, NYLON challenged the 23-year-old singer-songwriter to TriDifferent for a day. Here’s how it went.

A FRESH SOUND

NYLON caught up with Day as he was deep in the process of preparing new music set to launch in late August — and by his own account, it's the most creatively alive he's felt yet. He's been refining his sound and sharpening his pen, leaning further into what makes his songwriting distinctly his own.

“I’ve been working on this sound for the past 6 months ... I think it’s the best music I’ve ever made up to this point.”

A big part of that growth has come from trusting himself. In the past, Day says, he might have leaned on a collaborator to work through a difficult moment in a song. Now, he's staying in the room with it. "I'm allowing myself to work through things that maybe in the past, I would've leaned on another writer for," he explains. "I've really been focusing on honing in on what makes a Thomas Day song a Thomas Day song."

It's a subtle but significant shift — the difference between an artist finding an audience and an artist finding himself.

A FRESH APPROACH TO TOURING

Day’s typical tour routine is simple and relaxed — “manuka honey, probably some tea” — ensuring he can keep up with the demands of life on the road.

Today, he’s chewing Trident gum and dialing up the TriDifferent energy, with a scenic scooter ride to the venue and a fresh pre-show ritual. Before taking the stage, he swaps his low-key routine for a breathless circuit of push-ups and high-knees, followed by a bracing cold plunge.

“When people show up to a concert, it’s a crazy feeling to know they’re here for you. And it’s so mutual.”

It’s all in service to his fans. Whether he’s winning over a crowd on stage or teasing a clip of a new song on social media, Day brings an exhilarating physicality to everything he does.

A FRESH LOOK

If Thomas Day has a signature look, it skews effortlessly casual: boots or sneakers, baggy jeans, and a T-shirt that may or may not make it to the end of the night. "A fella gets warm on stage," he deadpans, "so a fella will take his shirt off on occasion."

Inspired by Trident gum, Day pushes past his default formula — mixing in long-sleeved silhouettes, bold color, and some pattern for an impromptu show in New York. The result is a look that still feels unmistakably like him, just dialed up.

“I love these looks. They are a bit different, but still really fit into how I like to present myself.”

Outfitted in the new looks, he runs through a handful of fresh tracks before taking the stage — a preview of the era he's been quietly building toward. Asked what listeners should expect, he keeps it simple: the best work he's ever done, delivered exactly on his own terms.

That, more than the pink hair or the cold plunge or the bold new palette, might be the most Thomas Day thing of all.
