Who will replace Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow? Turns out, Margot Robbie in talks.

As the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard barrels on, there is speculation about the future of Depp’s projects. Anyone 25 and under may know Depp first and foremost as Captain Jack Sparrow, the inebriated swashbuckling pirate he’s portrayed in The Pirates of the Caribbean films. Now, the fate of his biggest — and drunkest — role remains in limbo.

The film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that Depp is not expected to return to the franchise “at this point,” though he did add, “that future is yet to be decided.” In talks to take his place? Margot Robbie. Doesn’t seem like much of a 1:1 comparison, IMO.

It’s unclear whether Robbie would be replacing Depp, who was set to star in a reboot of the series, or if she would star in the all-female cast version of the franchise has long been in the works.

“Yes. We are talking to Margot Robbie,” Bruckheimer said. “We are developing two Pirates scripts – one with her, and one without.”

“My feeling was that these characters should be able to have their proper goodbye,” Depp testified during the trial. “There’s a way to end a franchise like that… I planned on continuing until it was time to stop.” But later said he wouldn’t return to the role even if Disney offered him all the money “on this earth.”

Robbie has been in talks since at least 2020 to become a part of the Pirates franchise, when she was originally going to star alongside Depp in a reboot filled with “lots of girl power.”

It’s unclear what the future of the Pirates franchise holds. It’s been a cash cow for Disney since the first film in 2003, grossing a whopping $654.3 million since the initial film in 2003.

But we’d love to see Robbie as a pirate, especially close to her upcoming title role in Greta Gerwig’s The Barbie Movie. A pirate and Barbie? Talk about range!
