We’re Over the Getting-Dressed Spiral — Here’s Why Simple Routines Are Winning
Let me set the scene: I’m getting ready for a night out after fully planning my outfit in my head, and 15 minutes before I need to leave the house, I hit a wall and start to rethink everything. One internal voice tells me to lean into comfort — grab the same top and jeans I wear on repeat and don’t think twice. Another tells me to focus on what photographs well and what might earn the most compliments, even if it doesn’t make me feel amazing. Suddenly, two minutes turn into 20, and zero progress is made. That’s when I end up in a look I really don’t love — and leave the house feeling even less confident than when I started.
That getting-dressed spiral is an all-too-familiar routine that no one wants to go through — but somehow everyone still experiences. It’s a rarely discussed ritual of modern life, and frankly? I, for one, am over it.
Too Much Noise
We’ve never had more voices telling us who we should be and how we should dress: group chats, podcasts, algorithms, AI chatbots, that one person on your socials who seems to have completely figured life out before 7 AM (you know the one). And somewhere in that mix, asking ourselves “what should I wear?” has slowly become less logistical and more existential — a question that, at its core, is now somehow a referendum on identity, taste, and self-worth.
Enter the Inner Voices
This exact tension is the premise of Zalando’s Fall/Winter 2026 campaign, titled “Inner Voices,” which takes a comedic approach to our daily debate. Directed by two-time Grammy winner Melina Matsoukas, the short film features Lily Collins playing out the getting-dressed spiral in real time, with a look at her own inner monologue(s).
Designer Bella Freud and fashion commentator Nicky Campbell appear as Collins’ inner voices; Freud plays the calm and reassuring instinct, while Campbell is sharp and sassy. From their ‘control room,’ they capture the back-and-forth we’ve all experienced standing in front of a mirror when we were supposed to be somewhere ten minutes ago. Together, they guide Lily toward a look that matches her true intentions, proving that fashion is all about the confidence to express your identity.
Goodbye Chaos, Hello Simplicity
Through comedy, Zalando is signaling a cultural shift. We’re choosing to opt out of the spiral altogether, swapping endless must-have lists and mindless purchasing for thoughtful capsule wardrobes, trustworthy staples, and reliable routines (and closets) that eliminate decision fatigue altogether.
Zalando built itself as an answer to analysis paralysis; the e-commerce destination has thousands of brands at a wide range of price points and styles, which means less hunting and less second-guessing. It also means quieting those voices and trusting yourself, your instinct, your taste, and your choices. Because the right decision is usually the most obvious one.
