Musicians Share Their Experiences With Sexism In The Industry

And explain why men need to have conversations about sexual assault

by Hafeezah Nazim

Last month, we got to know some of the killer bands that performed during this year's Babes All Rock festival and discussed with them the importance of female unity and how women are dominating the rock scene. And while the conversation around female empowerment in music was an uplifting one, we also touched on a much heavier topic: sexism in the music industry.

"I'm a great guitarist," says High Waisted's Jessica Louise Dye. "But every bit of news about me is like, 'Tell me about your outfit!' Or 'What hair product are you using?' Or 'How does it feel to be the greatest female musician?' and it's like, no, I'm not a 'female' musician. Like, my genitalia doesn't play my guitar."

See what bands like Fruit & Flowers, Debbie Downer, Combo Chimbita, and more had to say about sexism in the industry and why men should be having conversations about sexual assault in our video, below.
