Drake’s formative years in Toronto have been so well-documented, both by the rapper himself and by the legions of Drake scholars and historians who live online, that it’s hard to imagine a piece of teenage Drake ephemera has yet to be unearthed. That’s what makes the above video such a treasure. It shows a pre-Degrassi Drake performing some very awkward improv at a Toronto club.
While the Drake we see is long ways away from Saturday Night Live, he does exude the charisma of a natural performer. Still, it’s hard to believe that the audience, let alone his scene partner, knew that they were standing in the presence of someone who would eventually become one of the biggest stars on the planet.
Drake has made no secret of his desire to pursue acting. And, while he’s clearly got the chops, it’s hard to envision him taking a break from this whole rap thing. Drake’s latest album, VIEWS, currently sits atop the Billboard charts for a fifth straight week, and the rapper recently released a handful of new songs ahead of his upcoming Summer Sixteen tour.
Drake the actor may be somewhere on the horizon, but for now, we’ll just have to make due with Drake the rapper, and we’re totally fine with that.
