Watch Netflix’s Creepy ‘Death Note’ Trailer

“Shall we begin?”

by Taylor Bryant

What if you had the power to decide who lives and who dies? Would you take advantage, killing off all of the people who have ever wronged you? That’s the question posed in Netflix’s American remake of Death Note.

The film is based on a popular Japanese manga series, by Tsugumi Ohba, of the same name. The American-ized version follows Light Turner (played by Nat Wolf), a high school student who finds a book capable of killing off anyone whose name is written in it.

Director Adam Wingard, the guy behind the Blair Witch, told Collider that it was important to him to keep the adult themes of the anime film intact. “So, it’s got nudity, it’s got swearing, it’s got a ton of violence,” he says.

From the looks of things, what it doesn’t appear to have is any Asian actors. Clearly, Hollywood has yet to learn their whitewashing lesson… and it’s unclear if they ever will. We’ll have to wait until August 25 to see if the criticism outweighs the performance on this one.
