Paper Lovee Turned A Jail Sentence Into The Jump-Start For His Career
It’s obviously worked out for him
Each week, we’re bringing you a new video by one of 300 Entertainment’s best up-and-coming artists, as part of the BRKRS series. Each musician was placed in the same 10x10 room, with the assignment to make the space their own and tell their audience who they really are. They’re the next big names in the music industry, we’re just letting you know first.
Atlanta native Paper Lovee was sentenced to 16 months of prison time right as his career started to build, but instead of letting that put a damper on his music, he used that time as motivation for his future. He told Shanté Cosme that, while he was behind bars, he often thought, “I’m not doing anything, especially not accomplishing my goals, because I’m right here stuck, and I can’t chase them,” but that once he got out, “anything that I couldn’t do or wasn’t making happen, I have to make happen now, because I don’t know how much time I have.” Which has definitely worked—he’s now signed with 300 Entertainment, which considers him to be an artist to watch.
For his turn in the BRKRS room, Paper Lovee chose to keep it simple with a chaise lounge and a table with a phone. He spends a lot of time in the video on that phone, actually—and it seems like he’s not having the best conversation of his life. This is reflected in the song, in which he basically poses the question, “What are we?” to an unnamed suitor. “I put my heart into every song, no matter what the circumstance,” he said. And he put his heart, literally, into this video (you’ll get it once you watch).
