Watch The Eerie New Trailer For ‘The Circle’

They’re watching you

The premise for the forthcoming thriller The Circle sounds like a page ripped out of a millennial's life: A young woman is hired to work for a powerful tech company (think the Google, Instagram, and Snapchats of tomorrow) whose aim is to make the world a better place. Part of that involves watching people’s every move.

“Knowing is good, but knowing everything is better,” Tom Hanks says in the trailer. Intrusive, much? Yes, yes it is. Based on Dave Eggers’ best-selling book, The Circle stars Emma Watson and Star Wars’ John Boyega as they work to figure out how to slip from the grips of their company’s dystopian society.

It’s a movie that will hit close to home for pretty much anyone with a smartphone who has witnessed the evolution of social media over the past couple of years. James Ponsoldt, the writer, director, and producer of the movie, spoke with EW about the film, stating, “So the film is, at its core, about privacy, it’s about surveillance, it’s about what is the value of keeping some part of yourself just for yourself and not sharing it and how you live an important life, how you live a life that’s memorable and what you need to document or not document.”

I think that’s something most of us are still figuring out. See what happens when Black Mirror comes to the big screen in the trailer above. The Circle hits theaters April 28.
