THE INSIDER: JOSS STONE
“my dog looks like that werewolf guy.”
Nine years ago, a sixteen-year-old girl from Southeast England became instantly famous after debuting an album of eclectic soul covers. Now, almost a decade late, Joss Stone has returned to her roots with the upcoming release The Soul Sessions Volume 2 (out July 31.) In between photo shoots and planning her international tour, Joss found the time to chat with us about what it's like to not be a teenager, her stint on The Tudors, and her dog's celebrity lookalike.
How has you style changed musically since recording The Soul Sessions?
From the age of 15 to 25 we all have changed. But I guess my music style has always been soul, which really isn't a style. Soul can be anything- as long as you mean it! I don't want to be stuck in one sound… some of it's bluesy some of it's funk.
But it must be different performing now as a 25 year old and not a teenager.
I'm not scared anymore. My nerves only happen when I'm on stage. In the studio, I'm not scared… It's one of my favorite places in the world to be. I think that's kind of my way now. I don't really see a point in fussing over music, it is what is and it's going to be what it's going to be. And if it didn't work after a couple hours of working on it, it never will.
What's your favorite song on The Soul Sessions Volume 2?
I really like “I Got the Blues.”
In the past few years, you've booked some major acting gigs (including a reoccurring role on The Tudors). Are we going to be seeing more of you in TV and film?
I'd love to do more! I love doing it! I'm really aware I'm not really an actress yet. I have no idea what I'm doing, that's why I kind of find it fun. That kind of stuff keeps me alive and kicking.
What TV show are you currently obsessed with?
The Mentalist! He is awesome! Love him! It would be great if it he real. I also just watched Twilight for the first time (laughs). It actually was really good. I really love fantasy and adventure. My dog looks like that werewolf guy, when he's, you know, a dog. When I saw him I actually screamed out, “Oh my god! That's Igor!”
What's next for you?
I'm going to make another album!
Soul Sessions Vol. 2 hits shelves on July 31st!
