Snowmen are supposed to be fun. They signal the arrival of winter. Making one—though more difficult than people make it out to be—is meant to be a bonding family affair if we’re to believe the movies. They linger on your front lawn or in the park, forever reminding you of that loving time together. Frosty was a “jolly happy soul;” snowman killer is something else entirely.

Based on the best-selling novel by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, The Snowman is a chilling mystery about a man who goes around killing “women he disapproves of.” In the first trailer, Michael Fassbender plays police officer Harry Hole who, along with a new recruit played by Rebecca Ferguson, is tasked with tracking down the cold-blooded killer. It’s a cat and mouse chase in the snowy hills of Norway.

Decapitated bodies are found, weird notes that look to be written by a child are left, and creepy snowmen wielding guns are present. The film will also star Charlotte Gainsbourg, J.K. Simmons, and Val Kilmer.

Watch the trailer above, but only if you’re ready to never want to build a snowman ever again. The film comes out October 20, hopefully way before the first snowfall.
