The xx Flirt With Desire In “Say Something Loving” Video

“Don’t let it slip away”

by Hayden Manders

Look no further than "Say Something Loving" to understand where The xx have taken their sound on I See You, the trio's third studio LP. Since dropping the album's first single, "On Hold," it became clear Jamie xx's keen ear for genre-defying electronic music would carry the band from muted bedrooms to the dance floor. The video did well to play into teenage idleness, as does the new video for the aforementioned second single. Only this time, the thrill of new romance and flirtation pervade.

Directed by famed British photographer Alasdair McLellan, "Say Something Loving" acts as a soundtrack to dancehall love and the pulse of London's creative, longing, and curious youth culture. (It should come as no surprise to hear that McLellan also directed the Marfa, Texas-centric "On Hold" video.) They tease, they dance, they steal knowing glances, they crash into one another. The song muses over whether an infatuation is genuine or not, while the video embraces the present, forgoing doubt in favor of temporal joy. The truth can come out later. For now, relish in the heat of the moment.
