Watch The Surprisingly Woke Trailer For ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’

Giant robots and female empowerment

by Ben Barna

For the fifth installment of his unbreakable Transformers movie franchise, director Michael Bay is trying something a little different. Instead of the thinly-veiled misogyny that introduced Megan Fox to the world as she washed a car in Daisy Dukes, or gave Rosie Huntington-Whiteley exactly three lines of dialogue, the new trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight, is centered around a new concept: girl power. In it, a little girl named Izabella, played by Nickelodeon star Isabela Moner, acknowledges that yes, she throws like a girl and runs like a girl and fights like a girl. “Fight like a girl?” she asks. “Yeah, I fight like a girl. Don’t you?” (As a matter of fact we do, thanks for asking!)

The rest of the trailer is your typical Transformers metallic clusterfuck as giant robots beat the crap out of other giant robots as humans either watch in awe or run in terror. Here’s hoping that this movie is in fact woke enough to not turn Moner’s character into another screaming girl for Mark Wahlberg’s character to save and that she actually remains the badass she seems to be to the end. Check out the trailer, below, and watch Transformers: The Last Knight when it hits theaters on June 23.
