Will Smith Says Jared Leto Disappeared Into The Joker For Suicide Squad
“I’ve never actually met Jared Leto.”
Last summer's filming of Suicide Squad was punctuated by Instagram posts of the comic-book movie's large cast chilling super hard. Here they are giving each other tattoos! And here they are at a music festival! But noticeably absent from all the group hangs was Jared Leto, who seemed to have isolated himself from the rest of the cast. Will Smith basically confirmed as much in a new interview with Beats 1, saying that Leto was so immersed in his role as the Joker and that Smith still hasn't met Jared Leto himself.
“[Suicide Squad] is insane,” said Smith, who is playing the role of villanous assassin Deadshot. “I’ve never actually met Jared Leto. We worked together for six months and we’ve never exchanged a word outside of ‘Action!’ and ‘Cut!’ I literally have not met him yet. So, the first time I see him will be ‘Hey, Jared. What’s up?’ He was all in on the Joker.”
The obvious comparison would be to Heath Ledger, who reportedly underwent a similar methodolgy when he played the iconic villain in The Dark Knight. That was confirmed in a recent documentary, where Ledger's dad Kim revealed the disturbing diaries his son kept as a way of immersing himself in the character. We're not sure if Leto kept his own Joker diaries, but he did send costar Margot Robbie a live rat, so we might as well give him the Oscar right now.
