Bread&&Butter Was A Celebration of Berlin's Subcultures

Where music, fashion, and art came together as one.

Years before global fashion weeks were taken over by livestreams, Zalando had already showcased why it stood out as a global powerhouse by disrupting the traditional runway blueprint. Across its defining 2016-2018 era, Bread && Butter by Zalando turned Berlin’s Arena into an epicenter of style, sound, and subculture. Under the moniker “BOLD,” the three-day Festival of Style & Culture breathed fresh life into the high-fashion ecosystem. Over 30,000 attendees gathered to experience what the future of style had to offer, a feat made possible because the gatekept systems often associated with the fashion industry were intentionally stripped away. In fact, direct access to over 40 international brands and 450 limited-edition, exclusive Zalando products served as the core of the immersive experience.

Bread&&Butter, the cultural and experiential juggernaut, enmeshed local and global subcultures. What made it indicative of this era of Zalando’s growth was how it channeled the raw authenticity and energy of Berlin’s underground music scene. Those who attended were able to breathe in the workings of incisive creators firsthand. These moments further encouraged attendees to continue on their own creative journeys.

B&&B did more than predict fashion’s digital future — it built an infrastructure for it. The integration of Europe’s then-advanced interactive runways and “See Now, Buy Now” technology allowed Zalando to bridge the gap between the brand heat that lives on physical runways and the immediacy of digital gratification. Attendees wore custom RFID wristbands to post their own street style photos and runway collections to their social media feeds. The shoppable livestreams allowed for millions of global viewers to purchase pieces in real time.

Perhaps what’s most significant beyond the physical space and the immediacy of real time is that B&&B’s digital-first infrastructure is now the norm globally. At a time when experimentation was running rampant within fashion, Zalando made a pivotal statement by bringing together 200 international creators, street-style photographers, and key music acts to generate real-time coverage, DJ sets, and social content. In total, the concept generated 1.45 billion media impressions across Europe and 35 million livestream views, further proving how experiential activations can resonate even with those watching an event from home.

Bread&&Butter served as an example of how celebrating subcultures can pay off. By handing over ownership to creators and style connoisseurs to shape narratives and experiential festivals, fashion returns to its roots and becomes an invincible force. While the city’s creative ecosystem continues to evolve, Zalando’s era and the contributions it made to wider cultural conversations will not be diminished. Instead, it stands as a definitive gateway showcasing how sound, style, and community intersect.
