Carly Rae Jepsen Plays The Alt-Girl Cinderella In Your Type Video

very pop, kinda punk

The Cinderella Story is a tried and true means of reminding people they’re beautiful no matter what. While some stay true to the narrative’s mainstays—malicious stepfamilies, a prince, a ball—others use the term loosely. It’s the latter that pique the most interest. Thankfully, Carly Rae Jepsen’s latest video falls into that category.

Her “Your Type” video opens with a monologue announcing that what we’re about to watch is, more or less, one of those Cinderella Stories. Jepsen is a gal down on her luck who wanders into a neon-tinted bar, gets the urge to put on some makeup, and sing on stage. From there, we go inside her head where she’s suddenly this glam pop-punk star and princess performer with adoring fans. Though the song is more about unrequited love, the video dabbles in daydreams. (Ain’t no lover to be found here…unless said lover is music.) At the end, the opening narrator concludes, “We need our imaginations in order to survive. Or do our imaginations need us in order to...never mind. Who really knows?" How…existential.

“Your Type” comes off Carly Rae Jepsen’s stellar album E•MO•TION. Read our interview with her here!
