Custo Dalamau studio visit

In 1980 at the age of 21 Custo Dalamau started a fashion line with his brother David. The siblings, who studied fine art and architecture, gained popularity quickly by incorporating elements of graphic design into the creation of their pieces long before it was a common thing to do. The fashion line is known for its complex and colorful prints and intricate textile finishing, all of which continue to evolve with every season. When the call came through with the opportunity to meet the head honcho himself we grabbed our camera, stoked to hang with this legendary dude. Kicking it with a designer the day before his show is a pretty incredible experience--there are fittings going on, runway music decisions being made, and it was cool to see Custo himself handling all of these aspects of the production. As we walked in he said "Listen to this, this is the music for my show!" as he played tracks from the band Hot Natured.Custo walked us through the pieces in his collection and told us about his life, his process and what keeps things exciting for him 30 years after the label's beginnings. "It's about the 3 C's" he said "Chic, Contemporary and Color," while showing the details in the mixed fabrics on one of his pieces. When we asked him of his favorite place in the world he said "Rio" which reads through in his relaxed but glamourous collections. The designer (who is also a father of five) told us he's a fan of bands like David Bowie and U2. "I'm from the age of rock n' roll" he said with a smile as models walked back and forth in different looks.Custo Dalamau is not only impressive for the fact that at 54 he moves around with twice the energy that we do, or for the fact that he's in touch with every aspect of his collection down to designing footwear and selecting runway music, but also for the fact that he showed 64 looks on Sunday both men's and women's and all of them strong. Meeting with this legendary designer was awesome, his energy so positive and his outlook on design so original. His show was twice as exciting to watch knowing that every part of the production was Custo's choice, down to the last detail. Thank you so much Mr. Dalamau for taking the time to share some knowledge and experience with us and for having us out to the show!
