editor’s pick: chiquita banana

chick-chicka-boom!

by katherine martinez

I've always loved '40s style icon Carmen Miranda--blame it on my Latin roots, but the moment my third grade teacher announced that we were having "Dress Like a Famous Person" day, I rushed home and put together a "Chiquita Banana" outfit: my mom's bright '80s floral sweetheart neckline strapless dress (over a T-shirt so as to be school appropriate) and a headdress I crafted out of plastic toy fruit and strategically placed scotch tape. I flounced into school triumphantly the following week, feeling very chick-chica-boom chic.  These sunnies are a (slightly) more mature, PC, and nostalgic take on that moment--can't wait to rock them at summer festivals!
