Listen To The Producer That Rolls With The Weeknd And Childish Gambino

it’s no mystery that jr. hi’s beats are hot

by Sydney Gore

Ever since he randomly popped online in 2013, jr. hi's real identity has always been a mystery. Last year, the producer released his debut Virtual Lover EP, which featured collaborations with The Weeknd, Childish Gambino, and Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, whom he considers to be close friends. Today, NYLON is premiering the long-awaited follow-up EP, raW drivE. All of the tracks are stripped down and covered in dark production, as they were written and recorded in complete seclusion—jr. hi set up a makeshift studio in the kitchen of a mountainside house located on a small island in the South Mediterranean Sea.

"I can't tell you the name of the island, it's a secret," jr. hi told us in an email. "I went out there to find the headspace I needed to record these new songs I'd conceived in the City of Angels during the previous month. The lyrics and ideas often come in dreams, then I work on the music when I'm high to make sure to keep it crucial."

On the title track, jr. hi said that it's about a crazy, sexual relationship with a woman who is as fine as a brand-new sports car—"She's fast, she's dangerous, she'll drive you out of your mind." Stream the entire
