When I was a sophomore in college, a friend of mine posted the title track from Kitten’s Cut It Out EP. In all honesty, I probably clicked on it because the band was named after one of my favorite creatures, but I became completely obsessed with their synth pop sound about 30 seconds into the song. From there, I proceeded to download all of the band’s music and listen to them as often as possible.
The same year that Kitten’s Like a Stranger EP was released, the band opened for Charli XCX. Frontwoman Chloe Chaidez and Charli were a perfect pair on stage, and it was a spectacular display of the glory of girl power. In 2014, Kitten released their long-awaited debut self-titled album.
Today, NYLON is premiering the music video for “Church,” a track fresh off Kitten’s newly released Heaven or Somewhere in Between EP. Chaidez told us that it’s her favorite song off the EP and describes it as playful with dark lyrics that create tension. Directed by Joshua Shultz and styled by Lisa Martinez—both of whom worked on “Fall On Me”—the video stars Chaidez alongside her six-year-old cousin, Jaylene. “She had never acted before but I feel like she captured exactly what we were going for,” said Chaidez. “A really candid, natural vibe.”
