“there’s no way she could’ve transitioned privately.”

Laverne Cox met Caitlyn Jenner for the first time earlier this month. She attended a private advanced screening of Jenner’s upcoming docu-series on E! called I AM CAIT, and walked away with a new friend and newfound respect for her fellow trans trailblazer.

Speaking with James Corden at The Late Late Show, Cox said, “She’s such a sweet woman and loves her family.” The paparazzi life she leads, however, baffles her. Cox goes into a bit on what viewers will see when they tune into I AM CAIT, saying that “sometimes [Caitlyn] has to change cars multiple times to dodge the paparazzi.” If it sounds stressful, it’s because it is. “There’s no way she could’ve transitioned privately,” Cox added. “I think she’s doing it very eloquently privately.”

Indeed, Jenner has wasted no time in using her extreme visibility to raise awareness for the trans community. During her Arthur Ashe Courage Award acceptance speech at this year’s ESPYs, Jenner said, “If you want to call me names, make jokes, doubt my intentions, go ahead, because the reality is I can take it. But for the thousands of kids out there who are coming to terms with being true to who they are, they shouldn’t have to take it.” Jenner and Cox are both so important—not just for transgender people, but for everyone for they are here to educate. Cox told Corden herself, “Diverse representations of trans people in the media is so important.” It’s up to us to listen.
