We Finally Know What Netflix’s ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ Is About

Mostly zombies

by Taylor Bryant

After teasing its Santa Clarita Diet show during the Golden Globes, Netflix left many viewers confused as to what, exactly, the new series was about. Us included. Was Drew Barrymore advertising some weird new diet? Have celebrity endorsements gone awry? Well, yes, they have but, no, Barrymore was not hocking the latest South Beach. Instead, she was teasing what we now know is her new zombie show.

Netflix just dropped the first official trailer for Santa Clarita Diet, which clears up a lot of the confusion we initially had. We’re first introduced to Joel (played by Timothy Olyphant) and Sheila Hammond (Barrymore) as they’re trying to bury a very bloody, chopped-up body in the middle of the night. Rewind to how they got there and we learn that one day, Barrymore woke up and realized she couldn’t feel her heartbeat, threw up what looks like a meatball, and started to eat raw red meat. All telltale signs that she’s transformed into a zombie (although that word is frowned upon in the Hammond household).

Much to her family’s dismay, Barrymore doesn’t hate her new lifestyle. She has new endless energy on limited sleep and can parallel park in one move. Pretty much anyone who is alive’s dream. One downside: she can’t control her cravings for human flesh. Watch February 3, when the series premieres, to see how the Hammond’s handle their "undead" mother and wife.
