If you can make it out of summer blockbuster season with a brain that's not mush, then you'll be rewarded with Ricki and the Flash, a smart comedy-drama that stars Meryl Streep as a rocker who's also a mom. In the movie's trailer, we see Streep's Ricki coming home and trying to reconnect with the family she left behind, and who've in turn moved on without her.
Streep's real-life daughter Mamie Gummer plays her daughter here, a girl who's highly skepitcal of her mostly absent mom, but who needs her after being dumped by her boyfriend. The movie was written by Juno scribe Diablo Cody, and directed by Jonathan Demme, who seems to be doing the same kind of emotional heavy lifting he did in Rachel Getting Married.
Ricki and the Flash hits theaters August 7.
