Tegan and Sara’s “Boyfriend” Isn’t Your Average Music Video

And that’s the point

by Ben Barna

Everyone's favorite identical twin sisters have just released their video for "Boyfriend," and it's a very cool, very curated clip that perfectly compliments their new electro-pop sound. Featuring cameos from Rachel Antonoff, Mae Whitman, and Sarah Ramos, the clip tries out gimmicks that videos like this are meant to have—hula hoops, dogs, giant fans, dancers, balloons, and cool backdrops. But Tegan and Sara aren't having it. Just let them sing.

The video was directed by the actress and filmmaker Clea Duvall, who not only shares the same taste in haircuts as the Quin sisters, but has also collaborated with them in the past (Sara scored Duvall's directorial debut, The Intervention, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year). "Boyfriend" is the first single off Tegan and Sara's upcoming album, Love You to Death, which comes out June 3. Watch it above.
