‘Top of the Lake: China Girl’ Trailer: Elisabeth Moss And Nicole Kidman Are Back On TV

The acclaimed murder mystery returns

by Ben Barna

Elisabeth Moss is still battle with Gilead, and yet here she is again, in Sydney, Australia, investigating a murder and reconnecting with her daughter. That’s the gist of the first trailer for Top of the Lake: China Girl, director Jane Campion’s follow up to the critically acclaimed limited series that launched Moss’ post-Mad Men career. The first Top of the Lake, which was set in amidst the stunning backdrop of the New Zealand wilderness, introduced us to Detective Robin Griffin (Moss), who was investigating the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl. It was one of the great television surprises of that year. In fact, it was so widely respected that China Girl is premiering at this month’s Cannes Film Festival, an institution not traditionally known for treating TV with the same reverence it treats movies.

In this new season, which premieres this September on Sundance TV, a suitcase washes up on the shores of Sydney’s trendy Bondi Beach, and Moss is sent to investigate. Her partner is played by Gwendoline Christie, a tidbit that we’ll leave right here for you to geek out over. And while the show is a murder mystery at heart, what this season really seems to be about is Griffin’s efforts to rekindle a relationship with her estranged daughter, who she gave up for adoption after her birth. Played by Alice Englert, the young woman seems to have terrible taste in boyfriends but great taste in adopted mothers; yes, that’s Nicole Kidman—TV’s other 2017 MVP—under those light prosthetics, gray hair, and adorable freckles. Sold.
