This is not a drill. HBO just bombed the Internet by dropping a short but revealing teaser for the second season of True Detective. All the hallmarks of True Detective are there, from the mournful country song scoring the clip, to prolonged moments of introspection punctuated by sudden bursts of violence. We see Colin Farrell's Ray Velcoro, a corrupt cop who looks like he'll be taking the smoking duties from Matthew McConaughey. Vince Vaughan is there as mob kingpin Frank Semyon, "a career criminal in danger of losing his empire." And Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch as two beautiful, damaged, and beautifully damaged officers struggling with gambling addiction and PTSD, respectively. We don't get too much of a sense of the season's new West Coast setting besides an opening shot of a tangle of freeways, but like season one, expect California to play a major role in the story. Season two of True Detective premieres on June 21, which is not soon enough.
