A Journey With The Artist Behind The Needle, Keith “DEZ” Hernandez

How a Bronx-born artist transformed a childhood instinct into a signature tattoo style and global career.

Written by Jon Stojan

From a Bronx kid with a pencil to an established New York tattoo artist, Keith “DEZ” Hernandez has spent much of his life creating without initially realizing where that instinct would take him. Art was simply something he did. He sketched on anything he could get his hands on, including the hallway walls of his childhood home. “I just did it for fun,” DEZ says. “My mom says I’ve been drawing since I was three. I even drew on the hallway walls at home, and somehow my parents never got mad. They just appreciated the talent I had.”

Tattooing was not always the plan. DEZ once imagined himself becoming a baseball player, inspired in part by the star who shared his name. As school, work, and life gradually pulled him away from baseball, he found himself returning to the creativity that had been there since childhood. “In hindsight, it was a blessing,” he says. “It brought me back to the art I loved.” Eventually, a tattoo starter kit landed in his hands. He hesitated to use it until a friend encouraged him to give it a shot. His first tattoo was far from perfect, but the experience immediately gave him something new to pursue.

Developing A Signature Style

DEZ began practicing on neighbors and developing his technique through repetition, patience, and discipline. His previous experience as a barber, where creativity often meant designing hairstyles and paying close attention to shape and proportion, gave him an unexpected foundation. He experimented with lettering, color, and different tattoo styles before becoming captivated by black and grey realism. Over time, he eliminated the styles that did not feel distinctly his and focused on developing an aesthetic built around smooth shading, sharp details, deep blacks, and strategic negative space.

That evolution eventually brought DEZ to a renowned New York tattoo studio, where he continued refining his technique and developing the visual identity that now distinguishes his work. “The dark contrasts against open skin created a style I still use today,” he says. “It became my signature.” Named one of New York City’s top 25 tattoo artists, DEZ operates out of Dez Studio NYC in Manhattan’s Financial District, where he has built a diverse clientele that includes prominent figures in sports and entertainment.

Creating Art That Lasts

For DEZ, creating a tattoo is about much more than reproducing an image on skin. Design, scale, placement, contrast, and the way a piece will age all become part of the process. Every shadow and open space has a purpose. It is an approach rooted in the same discipline that carried him from drawing as a child to building a recognizable style of his own. As his career continues to expand across art, fashion, entertainment, and sports, DEZ remains focused on the element that started everything in the first place: creating something memorable enough to last a lifetime.
