The pinnacle of awards season is finally here — the 2023 Oscars — and the Academy is handing out more than a few surprises. Tonight’s nominees include Everything Everywhere All at Once, which led the charge with a whopping 11 nods for A24, including for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Picture. The critically acclaimed Tár followed strong with six nominations in heavy-hitter categories, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Lead Actress for Tár herself, Cate Blanchett.

Meanwhile, indie releases like Marcel the Shell With Shoes On and Aftersun are also up for wins — including Paul Mescal’s first Oscar nomination for Aftersun, which the actor giddily celebrated. On the music front, Rihanna and Lady Gaga are nominated for “Best Original Song,” alongside Sad Girl favorite Mitski, who is nominated for the crushing “This Is a Life” from Everything Everywhere All at Once. Speaking of Gaga and Rih, both singers will be taking the stage for their own unforgettable performance son Sunday night as well.
