Kendrick Lamar Dominates This Year’s MTV Video Music Awards Nominations

Well, DAMN.

by Hafeezah Nazim

Get ready to kiss the summer goodbye and give a warm welcome to award season: MTV just announced the nominations for 2017's MTV Video Music Awards. And this year, Kendrick Lamar leads the nominations, proving once again that this is his world, and we're all simply living in it. Lamar, whose critically acclaimed album DAMN. was casually named the most popular album of the year earlier this month, secured eight MTV nominations, seven of which are for his single "HUMBLE."

But while the Video Music Awards are shaping up to be the Kendrick Lamar show (as opposed to last year, which was all about Beyoncé and Rihanna), there's some other notable nominees this go-round. Both Katy Perry and The Weeknd garnered five nominations, and other nominees include Lorde, for Artist of the Year; Noah Cyrus and SZA, for Best New Artist; and Halsey's "Now or Never," for Best Cinematography.

The network is continuing to implement non-gender categories, a strategy it debuted in May during MTV's Movie & TV Awards. For this year's VMAs, the network eliminated the “Best Female Video” and “Best Male Video” categories for “Artist of the Year."

In the “Best Fight Against the System” category, nominees include Alessia Cara's "Scars to Your Beautiful," Big Sean's "Light," and “Immigrants (We Get the Job Done),” from The Hamilton Mixtape. Last year, Maxine Waters presented the category, and it will be interesting to see who gets the honor this year.

The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California, on Sunday, August 27, at 8pm.

See the full list of nominations below, vote for your favorite artists here, and stay tuned for the show.
